The August 2012 issue of MONEY magazine named Newton America’s fourth best small city among places to live. Newton also has been named the safest city in the country by Aneki.

The Fig Newton was specifically named after this city. In 1891, Charles Roser, a Philadelphia baker and fig lover, invented a machine that put fig paste inside a thick pastry dough. The Kennedy Biscuit Company purchased that Roser recipe and started production, also in 1891. When the Kennedy Biscuit Company merged with the New York Biscuit Company, they became Nabisco and trademarked the fig rolls as "Fig Newtons." In 1991, when Newton and Nabisco held a celebration honoring the 100th anniversary of the Fig Newton, they served a 100-inch Fig Newton and had guitarist and singer Juice Newton perform!
This is an upcoming drama film about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and the terrorist manhunt. Portions were filmed at the local Lasell College. The movie is to be released in certain limited theaters on December 21, 2016, with a wide release planned for January 13, 2017.
